Vertigo - magazine article

The article explains how Hitchcock’s film vertigo shows his obsession with blonde women and how this links to the way he treated actresses in real life. It talks about how Scottie tries to control Judy and turn her  into Madeleine, which is similar to how Hitchcock liked to control the female characters and actresses in his movies. The article also looks   at how Vertigo uses camera shots, mirrors, colours, and point of view shots to show Scottie’s obsession and make the audience see things from his perspective.

This article has taught me how women in the industry are objectified and turned into something for men to look at, which links to the idea of the male gaze. Additionally, I learned that Hitchcock has a very recognisable style, which is called auteur and often repeats the same themes in his films, like obsession and controlling women.

This article links well with media studies as it centres around representation, especially how women are shown in older films and how male characters and directors have power over them, this links to Halls representation theory, as media produces decide how the audience views certain people. The article also includes media language such as camera shots, editing, miss -en - scene, colour etc, and applies them to real examples.
