Berkeley professor explains gender theory - Judith Butler
Berkeley professor explains gender theory | Judith Butler
Butler explains that gender is not simply biologically fixed, but is shaped by cultural norms, social practices and historical conditions. Society draws a distinction between sex (the biological assignment at birth) and gender ( the roles, and norms associated with a sex). She argues that these norms can be challenged and changed and that gender categories are not permanent or universal.
This is relevant to media studies as it is linked with representation as it discusses how different genders are or should be represented in the media . Media texts reinforce stereotypes of genders in advertisements, films and TV shows, making them more and more entrenched in our society.
